To kick-off the ‘ber months, Denton is celebrating the Halloween holiday with 31 days of community fun for the month of October. The city has lined up a variety of activities to help residents get into the spooky spirit.
Families can attend a unique twist on the classic trunk-or-treat on Oct. 12 at Denton Enterprise Airport, where visitors can get up close with various aircraft and speak with pilots and aviation experts. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume for treats and Halloween-themed activities.
If you’re a little older and looking for a more grown-up way to celebrate Halloween, also happening on Oct. 12 is Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios fourth annual Dentonpalooza. From 5 p.m. to 11:50 p.m. Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios is throwing a nonprofit variety show featuring different artists such as Riverboat Gamblers, Everything is Terrible, Aura, Darstar, and more. All proceeds are going to support the Denton Music and Arts Collaborative, The Art Room, and Leukemia Texas.
Sports enthusiasts can mark their calendars for Oct. 16, when the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University basketball teams face off at the Downtown Denton Square. The preseason showdown, which runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., will include live entertainment, interactive games, and a chance to meet the TWU and UNT players. On Oct. 26, the North Texas Roller Derby will host a Halloween-themed bout from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lone Star Events and Sports. Spectators can watch two festive teams compete in this fast-paced sport. Event details are available at Facebook.com/NorthTexasRollerDerby.
That same weekend, Oct. 25 through 27, is Denton’s famous Day of the Dead Festival. The festival will take over East Hickory, East Oak, and Industrial streets. The family-friendly event will feature food, arts and crafts, live music, and unique events like the Pine Box Races, a Twilight Lantern Parade, and a community altar. Festival highlights also include a costume contest, a pumpkin patch, and performances by a few Denton ISD schools.
Throughout the month, residents can also participate in the Haunted Hotline, an interactive experience that leads participants on a journey through Denton’s spookiest locations, uncovering clues to stop a witch’s dark reign.
Starting Oct. 18, Denton Parks and Recreation will host a Movie in the Park at Quakertown Park. Attendees can bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy Halloween-themed movies, with food trucks available for refreshments. For a full list of movies showing, visit the Denton Halloween website.
