Denton ISD Unveils Plans for Fifth Comprehensive High School

High School #5 is set to open Fall 2027 in Cross Roads

DENTON, Texas – Denton ISD is expanding again, unveiling renderings for its fifth comprehensive high school, set to open in fall 2027 in Cross Roads, Texas, according to the district’s construction website.

The yet-to-be-named high school will be located at Naylor Road and U.S. Highway 380. The 627,163-square-foot campus is expected to cost approximately $280 million and is slated for completion by July 1, 2027.

Designed to accommodate the district’s growing student population in the Braswell/380 Corridor zone, the three-story campus will feature state-of-the-art classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, and advanced fine arts and athletic facilities.

The district has not yet selected a name, mascot, or school colors for the new high school.

“Denton ISD’s Board of School Trustees approves the name of all schools and facilities in the district. Anyone can provide suggestions via the facility/building name proposal form on the district website,” said Reece Waddell, Denton ISD assistant director of communications and community relations. “As always, Denton ISD will seek input from a variety of stakeholders regarding the mascot and school colors.”

The district has also not yet named a principal.

“Denton ISD has not selected a principal for High School No. 5,” Waddell said. “The district will conduct its standard interview and application process for this position closer to the anticipated opening date.”

Funding for the school was approved as part of the May 2023 bond package. The new high school is expected to help manage student growth in the rapidly expanding 380 Corridor area.

“As with any new school opening, attendance boundaries will be examined and adjusted as needed to ensure students have the best opportunities to learn and grow,” Waddell said.

Construction is expected to begin in the coming months. While Denton ISD has identified public school funding as a top legislative priority, Waddell said the district does not anticipate delays to the school’s opening based on current circumstances.

“The basic allotment, which determines how public schools are funded, has not increased since 2019 despite inflation of over 20%,” Waddell said. “That said, Denton ISD does not currently anticipate any delays to opening High School No. 5 in fall 2027.”
