‘Uprising’ trailer brings thrills, surprises

New York Comic Con showed off some of the best movie and TV media since San Diego, one of the most notable being the “Pacific Rim: Uprising” trailer.
The original from 2013 is what critics like to call a “mockbuster.” The movie didn’t make much of a profit when it first came out, but steadily grew in popularity. During its theatrical run, audiences seemed to hate the movie while critics loved it — talk about irony. Once the film left theatres, it became a hit and here we are now.
When the trailer starts, it’s clear the apocalypse — from the first — hasn’t been stopped. All those sacrifices wasted. The video shows a young girl surrounded by chaos. However, instead of focusing on the mass destruction, the camera focuses on her and even gets close enough to capture her reaction.
The following scene shows Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) running up building rubble to look at the city below. If you look close enough, in the distance a Kaiju is laying on the ground. While the initial idea is that it has been recently killed — due to the city’s destruction — it could be possible that the people who live there have integrated the lifeless body into their architecture.
If you listen closely, as Pentecost looks at a newspaper article with a photo of his dad, Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), you can hear the theme song from the first “Pacific Rim” playing in the background. While it is slowed down and less electronic, it’s a nice nod to the original.
Of course, it wouldn’t be “Pacific Rim” without Hermann (Burn Gorman) and Newton (Charlie Day). The fan favorites from the first movie, make their reappearance in the film, and it looks as if they play a more integral part than just scientists.
With the return of the two characters above, it only makes sense that the filmmakers would bring back Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). While everyone loves seeing her fight in Yaeger, it’s nice to see her have a diplomatic job — especially one where she holds power.
One of the interesting things that has become popular recently is the focus on kids rather than adults. And this movie sticks with that. The trailer also hints at kids running the show. After showing several familiar faces, it displays a title card stating “A New Generation.” If that isn’t giving you signals, then I don’t know what will.
To top it all off, it looks as if Gypsy Danger herself has been remodeled and put back to work. Gypsy has been the defining Yaeger of the film, so it only makes sense that they would bring her back. And they’ve also created some new Yaegers that are sure to get the audience excited.
From new Yaegers to familiar faces, it looks as if “Pacific Rim: Uprising” could make it big. The only hope now is that audiences don’t dismiss this one in theaters as they did the first.
