While the only film people are going to be talking about for the next few months is “Endgame,” it’s important to remember that one of the most important times for films is upon us. The summer box office has been slacking in the past couple of years. However, this year holds a promising line up for fans of any kind of film.
Brightburn – May 24
Produced by James Gunn, director of “The Guardians of the Galaxy,” the film follows the well-known origin story of Superman. Although, things seem to take a turn for the worst when what’s supposed to be young a Clark Kent uses his newfound powers for evil rather than good. The films first trailer released shortly after Gunn was fired from the “Galaxy Vol. 3” set, showing that he was only slightly bitter about the decision. However, Gunn has been brought back as director and things are all good now.
Ma – May 31
Teens love to party. Everybody knows that. But when a group of teens befriends a woman in order to get alcohol, things take a turn for the worst. What was supposed to be a fun partying spot turns into a nightmare from hell. The film stars Octavia Spencer as the sinister ‘Ma.’ While it may seem odd that Spencer is taking on the role, she looks to fit the part by being subtly off-putting and yet still intriguing.
Rocketman – May 31
“Rocketman” follows Elton John (Taron Egerton) and his rise to fame, as well as his ups and downs. While the film is a jukebox musical, it’s still exciting that there are people who still want to make musicals. The film will most definitely be compared to last year’s Oscar-nominated film, “Bohemian Rhapsody” considering it was also a biopic of sorts and was also directed by Dexter Fletcher. That being said, “Rocketman” looks to be more fictional and fantastical than “Rhapsody” was.
Men in Black: International – Jun. 14
While most of the films Hollywood seems to be churning out these days are unsuccessful sequels, “Men in Black: International” seems like the exception. While the film is based on the original 1997 film, it broadens its borders and takes us across seas for even more action, adventure, and aliens. The beloved “Thor: Ragnarok” duo — Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson — are back in what looks to be a fun summer film.
Spider-man: Far From Home – Jul. 5
After the results of “Endgame,” Peter Parker (Tom Holland) seems to be at a loss for what to do. However, that won’t stop him from having a fun overseas vacation with his school friends. Unfortunately, he is unable to have a completely normal vacation when Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds himself trapped in our dimension. The interesting thing about this is that Mysterio is supposed to be a villain, but in the trailers, he looks to be helping Peter out. All speculations aside, the film looks to be one of the hottest of the summer.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Jul. 26
Quentin Tarintino’s ninth film takes us back to the late ‘60s around the time of the Manson murders. But of course with Tarintino, there’s bound to be a fun, raunchy twist to the historical happenings. Just from the trailer, one can tell they’re in for a wild ride when they sit down to watch this masterpiece. And yes, I do mean masterpiece. Almost anything Tarintino gets his hands on is wonderfully wacky in its own way. The film is star-studded as always with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and more of his regulars.
