Online vs. F2F Learning

Janaye Sweat, Staff Writer

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic students can either choose to learn from home using Canvas online, or they can choose to go into school for face-to face (F2F) instruction with the option to switch every nine weeks.

F2F learning has been the traditional norm for years, but with the new age of technology more and more schools have become opened to the idea of online learning.

“I chose F2F because of my friends,” sophomore Myrical Roberts said. “I got really bored at staying home because of Covid.”

This year Denton ISD has decided to offer both online and F2F learning. Yet, there are pros and cons to both. Students who prefer F2F want more interactions with others, while those who choose online learning are thinking about safety and being able to finish their work more efficiently.

“[Online] feels like more of a workload, but I picked it because I could just roll out of bed and do the work on my own time and feel secure at home,” sophomore Sydney Neubauer said.

Some students made the decision to go back to school because of extracurricular activities.

“I do Royals and it can be a struggle at school because of how we have to split into groups,” Jorja Krumnow said. “We also do online practices when we can, however it’s a lot harder to learn a dance over Zoom than in person.”

Some teachers feel that both online and F2F are the same.

“I would say 50-50,” Mrs. Young, human services teacher, said. “I feel like a lot of students struggle with accountability when they are at home and making sure they are logging in for attendance or turning work in on time.”

Then, there are those who have decided the way they currently chose to learn may no longer be the best option.

“I would love to go back to school,” Neubauer said. “Everything would be normal how it used to be before Covid but just with a mask.”

Krumnow feels the opposite.

“If I wasn’t in Royals, I would have done online,” she said.

Students have the option to make a change at the end of every nine weeks. This is not an easy decision as each student must decide to do what is best for them.
