Oscars 2017: Fun night ends in history-making surprise
‘Moonlight’ beats out ‘La La Land’ for best picture after onstage mix-up corrected
February 28, 2017
The Oscars started with a song and ended with a shock.
Justin Timberlake opened the show with his hit single “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” He danced his way to the stage, getting everybody ready for the night. The crowd was on its feet and ready to move. It was like attending a JT concert, but for free.
Host Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue was funny but still had a meaningful message in it. Of course, no opening monologue is complete without political stabs. From making jokes about last years #OscarsSoWhite to tweeting Donald Trump, the night was filled with laughter.
Halfway through the show, Kimmel told the audience that no movie is complete without candy and unleashed parachuting bags of candy onto the audience. Later, cookies also parachuted to the hungry stars.
The theme for the show was inspiration, and stars were asked to talk about the performances that most inspired them. Charlize Theron was first and chose Shirley MacLaine. Seth Rogen talked about Michael J. Fox being his inspiration and arrived on stage in a DeLorean wearing “future shoes”.
One of the funniest bits of the evening was the “feud” that just keeps escalating between Matt Damon and Kimmel. The running gag kept the night light and airy.
The biggest shock of the night was “Moonlight” taking home the Best Picture award after “La La Land” was announced as the winner. After a confusing mix-up and a humble trade, the “Moonlight” cast and crew arrived onstage to accept the award, obviously not expecting to win.
