Students will compete directly with new schools in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. This includes participants in academics, athletics, and fine arts.
Joining District 5-6A alongside Braswell are Coppell, Denton Guyer, Lewisville, Lewisville Flower Mound, Lewisville Hebron, Lewisville Marcus, and Little Elm.
“It’s going to be another extremely competitive district with the addition of Lewisville ISD schools and Coppell,” Kent Laster, head football coach and athletic director, said. “Coppell was a very good team, I believe they went undefeated in their district and they won their first playoff game against our district. They are very competitive, Lewisville as well. All of the others are very strong and competitive as well. Just like the one we had last realignment.”
District 5-6A realignment for the 2024-25 & 2025-26 school years:
- -Coppell
- -Denton Braswell
- -Denton Guyer
- -Lewisville
- -Lewisville Flower Mound
- -Lewisville Hebron
- -Lewisville Marcus
- -Little Elm
“No matter what district [Guyer] is in, they are going to be at the top,” Laster said. “They are very well coached and they have extremely good athletes. Guyer is always going to be in the mix, and a team that people are going to have to deal with and they are formidable. Basically what they’ve done for quite a while and they’ve been very successful. We think very highly of them and their coaching staff.”
Our science UIL team will also encounter new challengers. “I could see all of them being very tough competition”, Anna Seibert, science UIL leader, said. “But ultimately UIL ends up being individual, top scores and then teams top scores. So if we put together a really good team or we have an individual that’s really good we can still win.”
Seibert’s thorough preparation for the upcoming exams positions the Science UIL team strongly for victory. “The exam isn’t changing. It’s pretty standard. Science specifically covers biology, chemistry and physics, all three categories and there’s 20 questions for each and the same people have been writing the questions for a decade, some a little longer. So they’re pretty consistent with what they’re doing and they’ve given us a lot of practice.”
Looking forward, Seibert is excited about “building out the team.” “The team this year is juniors and seniors. Last year it was sophomores and juniors and one senior. So, it’s nice to have a lot of the kids returning but they’re really excited and they’re recruiting new people so our goal is to grow it and double our size. So we were already at like six people. It would be really cool if we were regularly 12 people and just exposing more people to this opportunity to be involved.”
Presley Nicewarner, a senior in the theater program, reflects on last year’s UIL competition and anticipates the upcoming events. “I enjoy competing and getting to watch all the other people’s shows,” Nicewarner said. “I’m excited to see what show we do and to watch everybody else’s.”
Braswell High School’s UIL activities are optimistic about this year’s competition following the new realignment. Despite the introduction of tougher schools in the realignment, both UIL teachers and students are ready to face these new challenges with enthusiasm and determination.
