Texas has enacted Senate Bill 12, a sweeping measure that codifies parental rights in public education and imposes new restrictions on school activities starting in the 2025–26 academic year.
Under SB 12, signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, public schools must now obtain written, annual parental consent before allowing students to participate in any campus or district-sponsored clubs – both curricular and extracurricular – across Texas. Issued under the legislation dubbed the “Parental Bill of Rights,” this represents a major shift in how student involvement in school organizations is managed.
The law also bans school-sponsored clubs based on sexual orientation or gender identity, including clubs like GSA, or Gay-Straight Alliance.
In response to the new state law, Denton ISD has created a form for parents to fill out that gives students permission to participate in all student orgs/clubs or just ones that the parent specifically includes in the form.
The form can be found online at https://forms.dentonisd.org/Forms/StudentClubOrganizationPermission
Students will need their parents/guardians to fill out the form in order to participate in clubs/orgs such as Student council, Asian student union, Girls who code, and others.
