For four years, senior Macy Wingard has been one of the most dominant distance runners in Texas. Now, she can add another accomplishment to her already historic career: UIL State Champion in the 3200-meter run.
Wingard claimed the Class 6A state title in the 3200 meter run at the UIL State Track and Field Meet on Saturday, May 16, at the University of Texas at Austin adding a track championship to a résumé that already included three UIL State Cross Country championships. With the victory, she further cemented herself as one of the most accomplished athletes in school history.
Macy Wingard finds her self as Braswell’s first state track champion, and Denton ISD’s third, following in the foot steps of Denton Guyer alum Brynn Brown and Denton Ryan alum Kailyn Head.
Before becoming a state champion on the track, Wingard had already established herself as one of the top distance runners in Texas history through cross country. She won three consecutive UIL Class 6A state championships, claiming titles in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Throughout her high school career, Wingard consistently performed at an elite level against some of the best competition in the state. In cross country, she became known for her ability to control races from the start while maintaining a strong finishing kick.
In 2023, she posted a blazing 16:57 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. She followed that performance with another championship in 2024, finishing with 17:07.9, before capturing her third straight title this fall with her fastest time yet, 16:45.7.
Her success carried over into track season, where she continued to dominate distance events. Over the years, Wingard has broken school records, earned multiple regional titles and qualified for the state meet in several events.
Though this is not Wingard’s first appearance at the state track meetMacy went on to finish second place in 2025 in the 3200m run with a time of 10:08.035 and second place in 2025 in the 1600m run with a time of 4:49.574. In Wingard’s sophomore year, she finished second place in the 3200m run with a time of 10:17.703 and second place in the 1600m run with a time of 4:50.513.
This season, Wingard focused heavily on preparing for the 3200 and 1600, training through demanding workouts while balancing the pressure that comes with being one of the favorites in the state. Despite the expectations, she said she wanted to enjoy her final high school race.
“I just wanted to have a lot of fun with it because it was my last race,” Wingard said. “I was trying to keep the mood light and mostly just have fun with it. I knew that my training would follow through and be worth it.”
Wingard crossed the finish line with 10:19 to secure the state championship this year and cap off her high school career in memorable fashion.
Wingard’s accomplishment in the 3200 metter run marks another milestone in a career filled with memorable moments. From winning cross country state titles to now standing a top the podium at the track, she has helped establish a standard of excellence for the program.
Wingard will continue her running career at Brigham Young University in the fall. As she looks ahead to the future, Wingard said she hopes younger runners remember to enjoy the experience and not get overwhelmed by pressure.
“I would say just have fun with it and make the most of the experiences you get because it only happens once, and it went by so fast for me,” Wingard said. “Don’t stress too much, because it always works out in the end.”
