ROUND ROCK, Texas — Senior Macy Wingard won her third consecutive UIL Class 6A state cross country championship Saturday, November 1 at Old Settler’s Park, finishing the 5K race in 16 minutes, 45.7 seconds.
With the victory, Wingard became the first female athlete to win three straight individual cross country titles in the UIL’s largest classification.
“This moment is the result of years of dedication,” Braswell head coach Gary Brown said. “To win one state championship is incredible. To win three in a row in the state’s highest classification is historic. Macy is the fiercest competitor I have ever coached; we are incredibly proud of her commitment and dedication to her goals and our program.”
Wingard’s win marks the culmination of a high school career that included multiple district and regional titles, three state championship titles and four state cross country appearances. She helped lead the Braswell cross country program to statewide recognition through consistent top performances. She has also had notible accolades in track and field.
“Macy has elevated the standard not only for cross country in Denton ISD, but across the state,” athletic director Joey Florence said. “Her dedication inspires her teammates and student-athletes throughout our district. This accomplishment speaks to her extraordinary work ethic and the support of our coaching staff and school community.”
Principal DeCorian Hailey said Wingard’s achievements extend beyond athletics.
“Macy represents the best of Braswell High School as a student, athlete and leader,” Hailey said. “Her discipline and determination inspire her classmates and our entire campus community.”
Wingard’s accomplishments place her among the most successful distance runners in Texas high school history.
