The Braswell Bravo Company theatre directors will hold auditions for this year’s spring musical, The Little Mermaid, September 8 – 9 after school. The first portion is a singing audition, where students will perform about one minute of any musical theater piece. The second portion is a dance call on Wednesday, which all auditioning students must attend. Students will learn two eight-counts of a dance with dance instructor Ms. Rankin before performing it in groups.
“We have auditions today and tomorrow,” theatre director Christopher Rogers said. “You’ll sign up on our call board in the K hall and then your audition will consist of two parts. We also have callbacks on Thursday. Sometimes we’ll see people audition and then call them back to try a specific piece from The Little Mermaid. This is where we’ll see maybe three people for Ariel or two guys for Prince Eric, and that’s where we really make our choices to help narrow down who we think will fit each role.”
Last year’s musical featured a small ensemble, but this year’s production will showcase more student talent with a larger cast.
“This year we’re doing Disney’s The Little Mermaid, based on the iconic 1989 Disney movie,” Rogers said. “I thought this would be a great choice for Braswell this year. It’s a good opportunity to showcase our multitalented students and to incorporate a large ensemble and dance crew from both choir and the dance department, along with our theater performers. I found it would just fit our students really well this year. It’s also a good opportunity to do a larger cast show that will bring in audience members from around the town and around the school.”
Rogers offered advice for students auditioning for the first time.
“Go for it,” Rogers said. “Do it. It may be a scary process, but we are 100% behind you. We always want students to succeed and do well, and we want to include as many people as possible. I think it’s a great opportunity to try something new, and though it may be scary, I promise you we are behind you 100% and we want you to do really well.”
