A student by the name of Emily Garabito E started an online petition using change.org Monday evening. The petition urges Denton ISD’s superintendent and board of trustees to rethink its decision not to cancel school Tuesday, January 16.
The North Texas area has seen record-breaking temperatures and has been in the teens to twenties since Saturday. The expected temperature Tuesday morning when school starts is 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
Denton ISD is one of a few area school districts that chose to remain open Tuesday. School will begin at its regularly scheduled time. The district says that bus drivers will arrive a little earlier than normal to allow the busses to warm up before their first stop. Schools will also open their doors a bit earlier for students who walk to school.
Students enjoyed a snow day Monday, made possible by the already existing MLK Jr. Day holiday built into the schedule.
Other school districts that have chosen to open school Tuesday include Krum ISD, Prosper ISD, Aubrey ISD, Frisco ISD and Argyle ISD. Denton ISD and the other surrounding school districts met with county officials and officials from the National Weather Service before deciding to remain open.
Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Arlington ISD and Plano ISD join other North Texas school districts in canceling Tuesday.
