Golden Globes shake up Oscars race

The Golden Globes. One of the most important awards shows leading up to The Oscars. The choices of The Hollywood Foreign Press greatly affect the voters of the Academy Awards. Meaning if the HFPA decides that a film should win, it will most likely get an Oscar Nomination.
However, there was a bit of controversy when “Bohemian Rhapsody” took home the Globe for Best Picture – Drama over “A Star is Born,” which was the obvious choice and the one most thought would win. Now I’m not saying I’m bitter. But I’m bitter.
“A Star is Born” has been made three times, with this being the fourth, but as one of the films with the most nominations, you would have thought that it would take home at least two or three awards. Unfortunately, the film only gained the award for Best Original Song, which was basically a given since “Shallow” has become such a hit.
Another award viewers thought would go to Bradley Cooper was Best Director. However, if you watched “Roma,” you’d know that Alfonso Cuarón put all the technical effort he could into the film. Based purely on technical direction and the use of camera, shots, etc. I’d give it to Cuarón every time. That being said, I’m still hurt that “A Star is Born” lost another chance for an award.
That all being said, I can’t be totally mad at the Hollywood Foreign Press. They did give the Best Animated Feature Film to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which fills my heart with so much joy. And Justin Hurwitz won Best Original Score for a Motion Picture for “First Man” — which was one of my favorites of the year, but apparently, award voters didn’t get my memo.
One surprise I wasn’t expecting was the amount of awards “Green Book” would take home. While only nominated for five awards the film took home Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture, Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, and Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. That’s over half of what it was nominated for. The film gained praise with its lighthearted feeling and tough subjects. But I didn’t think it’d be that accomplished.
But back to the big question. How does this affect the Academy Awards? Now you may be wondering “Why should I care about all of this? These aren’t my awards to win.” Well, let me tell you. If the Globes decided that “Bohemian Rhapsody” deserved Best Picture – Drama over “A Star is Born” or anything else nominated, then the Academy is going to take notice and there’s a higher chance that “Bohemian Rhapsody” will win.
Listen, I loved “Bohemian Rhapsody.” I saw that film three times in theaters, and I haven’t done that since “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” But I don’t believe that the Queen “biopic” deserved to win Best Picture. “A Star is Born” is so much more of an accomplished film and does so many things that I can’t even begin to comprehend. Bradley Cooper created a film that wasn’t specifically tailored for Academy Award voters. I don’t think you understand how hard that is.
And if I have to lose another original movie-musical to the Academy Awards trying to make up for a past mistake or trying to choose the more popular-vote, then I am going to riot. When Oscars night shows up — February 24 — the Best Picture category will come down to three films. “A Star is Born”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and “Green Book”. If it doesn’t, I will be thoroughly shocked.
