BAFTAs and Critics Choice’s and SAGs, oh my!

With awards season already here, it’s important to keep up with all the nominations that feel as if they are coming out non-stop. So I’ve compiled three different lists of nominations — the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards — to get the nominees in order.
One of the surprises this season was “The Favourite” which currently has 29 nominations between the three, allowing the film to take the lead. The film took audiences by surprise and left critics in awe. While most believed “A Star is Born” to win most of the awards, there’s always a chance that “The Favourite” could win Best Picture.
To no one’s surprise, “A Star is Born” grabbed a total of 20 nominations. While it’s almost ten nominations less than “The Favourite,” the film was almost everyone’s number one pick of the year. Everyone’s choice for Best Picture. But as the deadline for nominees come to a close, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut can’t seem to hold its own. If the Globes were any indication then a lot of people are going to be disappointed.
“Vice” gained 17 nominations. From the trailer, I originally didn’t think too much of the film, but as nominations continue to come out and Christian Bale won the “Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy” Golden Globe, I’m second guessing my choices. Who knew a film about Dick Cheney changing the politics of the country would be categorized as a comedy.
Damien Chazelle’s fourth film “First Man” shows the realities of space travel and what it took for those men to get there. I’ve never been so immersed in a film before. His use of camerawork and sound design helped to create what it must really feel like to travel out of the atmosphere. The film received 17 nominations, even though it received varying comments from audiences and critics alike.
“Black Panther” gained 15 nominations for its score, ensemble, screenplay, and several other categories. The film took audiences by storm making it the highest grossing film in February and third highest grossing domestic film of all time. And considered one of Marvel’s best films, I’ll be surprised if “Black Panther” doesn’t take home at least a few awards.
“Green Book” got more nominations than I would’ve guessed. It was one of those films that I thought audiences would like, but wouldn’t discuss after seeing. I was wrong. The film took home three Golden Globes and received 13 nominations, placing it at the top of the ‘Most Nominated’ list alongside the films mentioned above.
Some audience favorites from last year also received quite a bit of nominations. “Crazy Rich Asians” received five, “A Quiet Place” earned five, and “Bohemian Rhapsody” got 12. All of which are big accomplishments for each film type. “Crazy Rich Asians” did something Hollywood hasn’t done since the ‘90s. “A Quiet Place” added to the already greatly improving horror/suspense genre. And “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a biopic/musical that people fell in love with more than they thought they could, hopefully paving the way for more films like it.
And I’m only mentioning the ones that are making headlines. The complete list of nominees includes some television and film that have been looked over, even if they don’t deserve to be. So I’ve attached parts of the lists below with the most important categories that will affect the Oscars.
